State FFA Convention

East Union Students recently attended the convention and participated in Meals from the Heartland, a project to feed millions of starving people here in Iowa and around the world. FFA members prepared 285,000 meals during their leadership conference. East Union students worked on the set-up crew and did the preparation set-up and box making and also worked a shift preparing meals.  Our "crew" of East Union students and advisor personally prepared 11 boxes of meals - enough to feed over 2,000 people. Thank you, FFA, for making a difference!

Students Learn Important Information about Cyber-bullying

On Monday, April 2, students in grades 3-12 traveled to the Mt Ayr School District to learn from international presenter Kevin Honeycutt. Kevin has developed online safety, anti-bullying and cyber-bullying curriculum which he shares with parents, teachers and students around the country. This is another important piece of our Anti-Bullying Program that students at East Union know and are to follow.

East Union is one of six Iowa school districts to have been selected to receive up to $38,000 in reimbursement as a match for a new school bus to replace the oldest school buses still in regular use. These districts will also receive full reimbursement for retrofits to reduce diesel emissions on bus engines older than 2004 models in their fleets. To read more about this, go to the SAI website.

New East Union PreK-5 Elementary School, Practice Gym & Vocational Agriculture Classroom

Photos of our new facilities and children enjoying their new spaces are showing on this homepage. On December 19, a reception was held for community members who served on one of these groups--"Invest in Our Kids", the 2009-11 Board of Education, or the Facilities Committee-- thanking them for their involvement in ensuring this project was a successful one. These community members previewed the new facilities. On Tuesday, January 3, our new school officially opened for students. Our PreK-5 children had the fun opportunity just prior to the holiday break to see their classrooms and learn their way around the new school. We invited the public to attend an Open House on Thursday, January 12 from 5:30-7:30 PM. We had our new Elementary School, Practice Gym and Vocational Agriculture classroom open to visit, as well as a free will donation chili supper sponsored by the Elementary PTO and the Junior Class, along with a home wrestling meet and basketball games. We had a wonderful turnout for these events and we were very pleased to have so many parents and community members see firsthand the new and beautiful facilities built for our students. Thank you for your attendance and we hope that you will return and visit our school again very soon!

Technology Update

The East Union School District has expanded the 1:1 Computer initiative to 8th Graders. The Boot Camp, for parents and students to attend in order to receive the computers, was held on Wednesday, January 11, 2012 at 5:00pm. Students in grades 9-12 received their computers in August. We are proud of the fact that this has been a successful endeavor and has allowed more students to have access to technology.

The East Union Alumni Association needs your help!

We are fundraising money for additional trophy cases to be put in the hallway of the new practice gym. East Union's current trophy case is full and over crowded. Additional trophy cases would spread out the trophies so they can be viewed better and there would be more room for new trophies that our students earn. If you would like to help by donating, please send donations with the bottom portion of this paper back to school with your child or you can mail the donations to the East Union Alumni Association, PO Box 15, Afton IA 50830. (Please indicate "trophy case project" in the memo) Please contact Roxanne Walter at roxwalter@iowatelecom.net for more information. We are very proud of our trophies that have been earned in the past and look forward to seeing more trophies in the future!

"Iowa, Did You Know?" shows that Iowa schools are struggling to keep up in today's dynamic new global environment and emphasizes that we must find ways to ensure our students' success.  Click here  to see the video.

Would You Like to Volunteer?

East Union is committed to providing the best education possible for our students. One of the ways we can do this comes through the services that volunteers give to our school. If  you or someone you know wants to be of service to the school, please let us know. We can use parents, grandparents, friends, and neighbors in many and various capacities. We ask that anyone interested in volunteering complete the Volunteer Form and return it to the school. We will be in contact with you to set up assignments and times, once school begins.
